Cookies may be either ‘persistent’ cookies or ‘session’ cookies. A persistent cookie is stored by a web browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date, unless deleted by the user before the expiry date. A session cookie expires at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed.

The type of information which can be recorded by using a web beacon is a user’s IP address, for how long a particular page was viewed, at what time, the browser type etc. Web beacons are used to analyze the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and see how websites are used.
